National Share Graphics, Inc. Dallas, TX. 1982. p.F87 ("George Epperson"
by Mrs. Amos Williams) |
We lived out from Hurtsboro in the country. We had a happy home. A
home where all the uncles, aunts, cousins and friends cam. We walked
to school and church. There weren’t any highways then. We had a good
time and we worked too. Mama and Papa set aside a plot of land and
called it the church land. What we planted on it was sold and money
given to the church. We planted and gathered the vegetables. Some of
the cousins came on a train. Their mother come with them. They
planned to stay several weeks. Papa met them at [the] depot in the
wagon. They brought a trunk. It was a treat to ride in the wagon and
go to the depot. We had several trains a day to come through. We had
a long hall (closed in) so we put quilts down and that is where some
of us slept. It wasn’t unusual to wake up and find your feet tied
together. We had lots of fun, but my sister, Lois, and I helped Mama
cook. It took lots of cooking during summer. Mamma and Papa had a
smoke house where they smoked and cured their meats. There is
nothing like good ole cured ham and sausage like they use to be.
It used to be in the country where you had to draw up your water
with a bucket from a well. In the country the water bucket is always
empty. One day a cousin that was there never went to well to get any
water, but this day she got the bucket and went to the well. When
she got back to [the] porch she found everybody lying out on the
long porch. We told her we all fainted when we saw her coming in
with water. She told us she should pour the water on us. We all
laughed.
In 1939, our father, Virgil M. Epperson, died. Of course things were
never the same. The four children never forgot the happy memories of
home.
We used to hear some uncles and our father tell about one day they
had been hunting and killed some bird[s]. They were out dressing the
bird[s] and a cat got one. They chased the cat and he ran under the
house. They said they went under the house after him and was giving
the cat a hard time with bad words and throwing sticks at him. The
preacher, Rev. Brewer, had come to their house and they didn’t know
he was in [the] house. He walked out in [the] yard and said boys,
that cat is giving you a time. They felt real bad. The cat ate the
bird. A long time ago the preacher came the night before he was to
preach. They had to stay with a family. They couldn’t get around to
their church very well in those days.
Four of the Epperson brothers worked for the L and N Railroads for
several years. |

Joel
Vaughn “Boots” Epperson told a story about a Christmas morning
spent with “Aunt Tommie” Screws; Boots and sister Grace Epperson
awakened on Christmas morning and found two china monkeys upon the
mantlepiece, which they assumed were presents for themselves; the
monkeys were not presents, but prized decorations of Aunt Tommie,
and she rebuked the children for taking the figurines down and
playing with them. |
|
Wife Sarah
Tommie Epperson Screws buried at Hurtsboro Cemetery; late in life,
Sallie Tommie Screws was crippled by arthritis; her legs had to be
broken to lay her remains straight in the casket.11
