BRYSON CITY. Oct. 13 Funeral services for Mrs. Delia Powell, 53,
who died about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in a local hospital, will be
held Friday at 2 p. m. in the Morning Star Baptist Church.
The pastor, the Rev. J. E. McDowell, will officiate, and burial
will be in the Watkins Cemetery. Mrs. Powell was a native of
Bryson City and had spent her entire life here. She had been ill
only a short time.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Annie Bowen of North
Wilkesboro, and Miss Peggy Ann Powell of Bryson City; four sons,
Leslie Powell of Virginia, Ernest Powell of Ohio, and Ray and
Richard Powell, both of Bryson City: two sisters, Miss Julia
Gibson and Mrs. Stella Neal Jackson, both of Bryson City; one
brother. Wade Gibson of Canton: 12 grandchildren. and several
nieces and nephews. Bill Moody Funeral Home is in charge of
arrangements. |

Sister Annie Bowens peacefully departed this life to be with the
Lord on Wednesday, November 30, 2005 at Mission Hospitals.
Sister Bowens will be remembered eternally as a person who
demonstrated love for others through her generosity, commitment
to family, friends and the community. Those who knew her best
were inspired by her humorous and quick - witted personality.
Sister Bowens was the second child of seven children. Born
November 17, 1921 in Bryson City she was preceded in death by
her parents, Fred and Della Powell; brothers, Ray, Ernest,
Leslie and Richard Powell; sister, Peggy Parrish; sons, Willie,
Jr., Milton and Pervis Bowens.
Sister Bowens was married to the late Willie Bowens for 31
years. From this union they were blessed with nine children,
Willie Bowens, Jr. Deceased, Bobby and Harold Bowens of
Asheville, Linda Jones of Asheville, Charles Bowens Magalene of
Richmond, VA, Edward Bowens Louise of Greensboro, Milton and
Pervis Bowens Deceased, and Minister Andrea Reverend Wayne
Purcell of Asheville.
Along with her children left, to cherish her memory are 30
grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 2 great great
grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and special
friends.
Sister Bowens was a former member and church mother of Worldwide
Missionary Baptist Tabernacle and a member of Hill Street
Missionary Baptist Church. She was an active participant at the
Senior Opportunity Center, a volunteer with the Council on
Aging, Senior Companion Program and a member of the past Hill
Street Floral Club. She also enjoyed assisting her senior
friends and acquaintances with transportation, handling personal
affairs and attending to the many needs of the sick and shut in.
The family will receive friends and loved ones at her home, 112
Pearson Drive, Asheville. Visitation is Monday, December 5, 2005
from 7 until 8 p.m. in the chapel of Hart Funeral Service, 60
Phifer Street.
The celebration of her life will take place at Hill Street
Missionary Baptist Church, 135 Hill Street on Tuesday, December
6, 2005 at 1 p.m. Pastor Keith Ogden will officiate. Burial will
follow at Sunset Cemetery. |

Bobby Lee Bowens, Sr., 76, passed away peacefully on September
28, 2018, at his home. [Born Mar 17, 1942]
Bobby was a native of Bryson City, NC, and moved to Asheville as
a young adult. He was the son of the late Willie Bowens, Sr.,
and Annie Powell Bowens. Bobby is a graduate of Reynolds High
School, an all black high school formerly in Haywood County, NC.
Bobby was the first black fireman in the city of Asheville. He
also retired from Norfolk Southern Railway after being a
faithful employee for decades. Through Bobby’s desire to serve
children, he drove a Buncombe County School bus for many years
until his recent death. Bobby was a dedicated member of Tried
Stone Missionary Baptist Church in Asheville. Bobby was united
in marriage to Sainte Ola Mapp and from this union they had
three children: Shondria L. Bowens (deceased), Bobby Bowens, Jr.
(deceased) and ShaDonna B. Stubbs (Pete) of Richmond, VA.
Including his two children and parents,
Bobby was preceded in death by brothers: Willie Bowens, Jr.,
Milton R. Bowens, and Pervis D. Bowens. In addition to his
loving daughter, ShaDonna B. Stubbs (Pete), the family left to
cherish his memory include grandchildren, Ravyn Anderson (JC),
Dorez Bowens, David and Christopher McDowell and Micah Stubbs;
five great-grandchildren; brothers, Harold Bowens, Charles
Bowens, Edward Bowens (Louise); sisters; Linda Jones, and Andrea
Purcell (Wayne); nieces, nephews and other relatives and
friends.
Bobby gave his life to the Lord many years ago and is now
resting from his labors in the presence of God. The family
wishes to thank all who played an inspiring role in his life.
Especially, his pastor Elder Alfred Blount and wife Regina and
the entire Tried Stone Missionary Baptist Church Family.
Following his wishes there will be no official service, cards of
sympathy may be mailed to ShaDonna Stubbs, 1705 Alyssalaine Pl.,
Richmond VA, 23231. The family requests that everyone remember
him by serving God and our fellow man. |
