Unable to locate death certificate in Clay Co., TX.  I even did a physical search through all of the TX death certificates for Apr - May in Clay Co. with no luck.  Is there a possibility that he died elsewhere in TX? The indexes do not show a William Barger having died in any other TX county in 1921.  Is there a possibility that the death year on the grave marker is wrong?   (There was a William Barger who died in Iowa.  That was a different William Barger.)

Obituary for William Paul Barger

William Paul Barger, 83, passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2013, in Holbrook. Funeral services were held May 18 at the First Baptist Church of Holbrook. Burial with military honors followed at the Holbrook Cemetery.

He was born on June 21, 1929, in Chickasha, Okla., to William Hampton Barger and Eilleene Hadetta Thomas Barger. Paul grew up on a farm there.

Later, he moved with his family to Santa Paula, Calif., and attended Santa Paula schools, graduating from Santa Paula High School in 1947 as valedictorian of his class. During his high school days, he got his first taste of newspapering when he worked in the shop of the Santa Paula Chronicle, first as a printer's devil, and later as a journeyman printer. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of California.
He received his Bachelor of Science degree in business and public administration in 1951. He remained a loyal Golden Bears fan throughout his life. He also received a commission as a second lieutenant through the ROTC program. He then served in the Army for two years, including a tour of duty in Germany.

June, his wife, was a native of Petersburg, Va. She attended schools in that city, graduating from high school in 1948. The couple met while Paul was stationed at Ft. Lee, Va., just outside Petersburg. They were married in 1952. After Paul completed his military service, they moved to California. Like many other couples in those days, she worked while he went to school. Paul received a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from Cal-Berkeley in 1954. He joined the staff of the San Juan Record at Fair Oaks, where he worked until 1957. That spring the opportunity came along to buy the Carpenteria Herald, and the Bargers and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Snyder purchased the weekly newspaper.

Later the Snyders sold their interest to Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Lord. After Mr. Lord's death, the owners decided to sell the Herald, and this was done in 1968. Paul then entered the real estate field. The following year they had the opportunity to buy The Winslow Mail the Holbrook Tribune-News and the Snowflake Herald, and so they moved to Holbrook in 1969, along with their son, Matthew, and daughter, Lorna.

Community service was very important to him, and he served for a number of years on the Holbrook Planning and Zoning Commission; as a member of the board of directors of the Petrified Forest Museum Association; as a life member of the Holbrook Lions Club; as a member of the First Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, taught a Sunday School class and worked in the nursery; as a member of the Arizona Baptist Children's Services Board of Directors; and as a founding member of Bread of Life Mission in Holbrook. Paul was named Holbrook's 1981 Man of the Year and 1999 Humanitarian of the Year, and in 2003 he was inducted into the Arizona Newspaper Hall of Fame.

Survivors include his son, Matthew (Debbie) Barger; his daughter, Lorna (Wendell Mitchell) Barger; seven grandchildren, Patrick Frost, Robert Sample, Christopher Barger, Jonathan Sample, Kimberly Barger, Rachel Barger and Joshua Barger; seven great-grandchildren, Asher, Aerabella, McKenzy, Hailee, Scarlett, Jonathan Jr. and Aubrey; his sister, Bernadine (Dale) McCracken; his brother, Earl (Sylvia) Barger; his close friend, Betty Heward; and five nieces and nephews, Carol, Theresa, John, Linda and Gary.

He was preceded in death by his father and stepmother, Bill and Winnie Barger; his mother and stepfather, Eilleene and Art Dagley; and his wife, June.

Earl Thomas Barger passed away on Nov. 3, 2014, in Kingman at the age of 82. He was born to William and Eilleene (Thomas) Barger on July 26, 1932, in Chickasha, Okla.

Earl proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force and after his service he became a general contractor.

Earl leaves behind his beloved family: wife of 62 years, Sylvia; son, John Barger of Kingman; daughters, Teresa Staniland of Tennessee and Carol Hood of Kingman; sister, Bernadine McCracken of California; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Emma Joyce Peterman, age 80 of Celina, Texas passed away on September 9, 2011 at her home in Celina.

She was born October 16, 1930 in Chickasha, Oklahoma to Otis Taft Barger and Ena Ruby (Brooks) Barger. She married S.F. Peterman, Jr. on August 7, 1948 in Celina, Texas. Joyce was employed by the Government and worked as a Postal Employee.

She is survived by her children, Mark Peterman and wife, Lori of Jacksonville Florida, Paul Peterman and wife, Debbie of Celina, Texas, Kim Tingle and husband, Scott of Celina, Texas, and Brooks Peterman and wife, Jennifer of Frisco, Texas; grandchildren, Jennifer Chabot, Kari Jenkins, Paula Jo Parks, John D.   After 1940, both Sybil and husband Phillip drop off the face of the Earth.  Unable to locate them in any city directories.  Sybil appears next in 1977 when she died with the last name of Sumner. 

Death certificate informant is Howard Sumner.  No relationship is specified.  However, death certificate specifies "married"' as opposed to "widowed".  One could assume she was married when she passed away. Also, the dc specifies that she was only living at current location for a year. Which could mean she moved into a different house down the street or moved into the county from somewhere else.

There is a Howard N Sumner that appears in Ventura Co., CA city directories with a Louise.  However this is a different Howard Sumner who was married to and is buried with a Nettie Louise Sumner in a Ventura cemetery.

Charles E. Gemar, age 70 of Gold Canyon, passed away Thursday, August 14, 2003 in Scottsdale.

Born May 4, 1933 in Clay County, TX to Uriah & Victoria Barger Gemar, Charles married Betty Ann Penrod on March 5, 1956.

Charles served in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict and was a pyrotechnic mechanical engineer. In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his stepmother Verna and his son Stuart.

He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Betty Gemar, children Steven Gemar, Becky Gemar-Rodriguez, Chuck Gemar, Jamie (John) Gemar-Dougherty and James (Terry) Gemar, one Sister Wanda Scherer, and twelve grandchildren.

Lucyle Higdon, 91, of Charlie, TX passed away Thursday, February 9, 2012 in Henrietta, TX.

Mrs. Higdon was born January 29, 1921 in Petrolia, Texas to J.W. "Fred" and Ella G. (Lewis) Barger. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Charlie and very active in her community. Her father owned and operated one of the first Orchards in Charlie, Texas.

She was preceded in death by husband John; son Ray McPherson; and great grandson Collin Ross Sanderson.
Survivors include 3 daughters, Barbara Matthews and husband Mike of Dean, TX, Delores Tucker and  husband Jerry of Charlie, TX, Fredna Hamilton of Wichita Falls; one son Johnny L. Higdon, Jr. of Wichita Falls, TX; 9 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Of note about Billie.  Billie's father Andrew Duncan marries again to James, Jr's sister Ruby Pearl Barger.  Billie's half-sister Gayle Gloria Korus marries James Jr's brother Luther Amison Barger.

Betty Jo Burnham
  Betty Jo is a bit of a mystery.  She first appears with Berniece and James in the 1940 Census.  Berniece was the one who reported the information to the Census taker.  Betty Jo is listed as the daughter of the head of household.  Born in OK and having lived in Tipton, Tillman, OK in 1935.  Both Berniece and James were living in the same place in Clay Co., TX in 1935.

When looking at the 1930 Census for both Berniece and James.  Both are living with their parents with no children aged 2-3 years old.  Performing a search of the 1930 Census for all "Betty" born around 1927 living in Tillman Co., OK, gives me no possible hits.

I suspect she may have been adopted but have nothing to back-up that claim.  It is physically possible that she is Berniece's child however, there is nothing to back-up that claim without access to OK birth records, which are not available online.  If Betty was James' child, I can find no evidence of a marriage prior to his 1933 marriage to Berniece and in 1930, he is single living with his parents.

Steve was raised in Charlie, Texas, and attended Petrolia High School, graduating in 1973. He then attended Cisco Jr. College and graduated Tarleton State University in 1977 with a Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture Business.

He married Alice Sherwood on July 8, 1977; they had no children. Steve worked in Iowa Park, Texas for several years with a soil analyzing company. He and his wife moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico in 1983 where he ran a small home business working with dairy farmers to improve their herds.

At the time of his death, he was fly fishing alone in the San Juan River near Farmington, New Mexico. An accident occurred and Steve drowned on October 24, 1986. His body was not recovered until October 25. He was buried in Charlie Cemetery in Charlie, Texas on October 29, 1986.
