1944 - 1946 - Was a Yeoman in the Navy during WWII - Feb 11, 1944 - 19 Mar 1946.

In an article published in the Courier-Journal, Louisville, KY, Jul 30, 1944, pg 20, Jessie was one of several WAVES being interviewed for an article in the newspaper:

"Our class is the highest group and we're all of us going out with yeoman third class ratings. Isn't it wonderful! We therefore made a trip and bought our rating badges and have been gloating over them ever since. We've worked pretty hard the last two months, but, gosh, it sure is worth it." That's from Jessie Marie Ray, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Ray, Tell City, Ind., upon her graduation from Yeoman School at Cedar Falls, Iowa.

TELL CITY -- Jessie M. Hicks, 75, died Tuesday at Owensboro (Ky.) Mercy Health Systems.

She was the former Jessie M. Ray, a retired office manager for Tell City Electric Co., a Navy veteran of World War II, a member of American Legion Post 213 Auxiliary and an RSVP Program volunteer.

Survivors: daughters Avis Patrick, Lorna Ford and Shelly Wolf; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Funeral: 10 a.m. Friday, St. Paul Catholic Church. Burial: St. Mary

TELL CITY, Ind. � Gary Arthur Patrick, 67, passed away on Tuesday, November 10, 2009, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Utica, N.Y., on May 12, 1942, to Art and Mary (Callahan) Patrick.

He was a 1959 graduate of Old Forge High School in New York. He served in the Air Force. A carpenter and construction worker, he was employed for 44 years with United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners. After his retirement he made beautiful heirloom furniture for his family. He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Avis (Hicks) Patrick of Tell City; mother, Mary Patrick of Tennyson; sons, Tom Patrick and wife, Kim, Gary Michael Patrick and wife, Tammy, and William Patrick and wife, Jennifer, all of Tell City; daughters, Elizabeth Small and husband, Ben, of Hatfield; Meredith Curtis and husband, John, of Boonville and Jessica Moore of Tell City; 13 grandchildren; brothers, Paul Patrick of Tennyson and Larry Patrick of Belton, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Patrick, and sisters, Mary Blythe and Gail Patrick.

He is loved and will be remembered by every stray cat that showed up hungry and scared, all the birds and families of squirrels that lived in his tree and Ralph the mouse who moved in during his last days and provided him with hours of enjoyment.

A Funeral Mass will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Paul Catholic Church. Bishop-Elect Paul Etienne will officiate. Burial will take place in St. Mary Cemetery. Visitation will be at Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home today from 2 to 8 p.m. and on Friday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Avis A. Patrick, 74, passed away on Tuesday September 06, 2022, at her home in Tell City.

Born June 22, 1948, to the late Harrison Hicks and Jessie (Ray) Hicks. She was united in marriage on October 14, 1978, to the late Gary Arthur Patrick. Avis was an LPN for 13 years, she worked for SIRS and retired from Southern Hills. She enjoyed reading, music and taking "sanity" drives to the porch of peace.

Surviving are her children Jessica Moore of Derby and William (Jennifer) Patrick of Tell City; her stepchildren, Tom (Kim) Patrick, Elizabeth (Ben) Small, Gary Patrick, and Meredith Curtis; sisters, Lorna (Steve) Ford and Shelly (Tom) Wolf both of Evansville;

grandchildren, Cathalyn Diaz, Ben Gutierrez, Alyssa and Lillian Patrick; great-grandchildren, Kendrick and Malichi.

Avis was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Services will be Saturday, September 10, 2022, at St. Paul Catholic Church at 10:00am. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday, September 9, 2022, from 3:00 to 7:00pm and on Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30am at the funeral home.

Avis was proud to be a nurse and thankful for the opportunity to help people.

According to both the 1900 and 1910 Census, Mary and William had two other children who died before 1900. Searching through various websites, there are two possibilities. One child is a strong candidate and the other is if-fy. The birth and death dates for both children fit in-between the births of the other seven children.

1) Strong strong hunch -- Joseph Eugene Ray - born and died in 1888. He is buried at the Saint Augustine Catholic Church Cemetery located in Leopold, Perry Co., IN. See marker at Find A Grave

This is exactly where the family was living in 1888. There are no other Ray's in this cemetery. This would fit, because the family moved to Anderson, Perry Co. by 1900. One other person on Ancestry does have this child listed as a child of William Jordan Ray and Mary Jarboe, complete with the dates. https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/15379966/person/19944256871/facts

If you have the money (I don't), there is a researcher who has access to the church records who will research this for a fee.

Other than that. I am about 90% sure this is one of William and Mary's children.

2) Hmmm.. not enough info -- Edith May Ray - From "Indiana Death Index, 1882-1920" FamilySearch. This girl was born ca. 1892 and died Apr 19, 1897. While this child fits in the time period, there is not enough info. First off, no county information is given in the database. Second, is is unlikely that they would have two children with the middle name of May or Mae. However, the original handwritten death index may actually have Mary instead of May. Since those are unavailable to look at, there is no way to know for sure. This child is probably not one of William and Mary's missing two. But then again you never know.

About the order of Gertrude's name. Most family trees on Ancestry have her name as Laura Gertrude Ray. I'm sorry, I just don't see it. I am assuming one person said her name was Laura Gertrude Ray and everyone followed suit.

All through the historical documents, her name is given as Gertrude L. ONLY the 1900 Census has her name as Laura G.

Her death certificate has Gertrude L. Her grave marker has Gertrude L. The 1910-1940 Census has Gertrude, Gertie, or Gertrude L Indiana birth AND death certificates for ALL seven of her children, have Gertrude. Her marriage license has Gertrude Ray.

Regardless of what someone may have told everyone else. Gertrude used Gertrude as her first name. That is what she obviously wanted.

Judith "Judy" Mae Haggard, 58 of Owensboro, passed away on Saturday, November 19, 2011, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born on April 7, 1953, in Worcester, Massachusetts to the late G. Clayton "Tex" and Mary Litkenhus Haggard.

She was a member of Immaculate Catholic Church. She was retired from the Opportunity Center Workshop. She enjoyed collecting angels, bowling, sewing, snipping, dancing and listening to music. Most of all, Judy enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She never met a stranger and her motto for life was "You're supposed to love everybody."

Aside from her parents she was preceded in death by two nephews, Matthew and Adam Beckman.

She is survived by a sister, Linda (Dave) Beckman of Owensboro; a nephew, Jason (Hillary) Beckman and their daughter, Madisyn Beckman of Allen, TX; and a niece, Stephanie Beckman of Lexington, Ky.

ROY, Ind. � Mabel Geraldine Fella, 91, passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2008 at Memorial Hospital in Jasper.

She was born on February 4, 1917, in St. Marks, Ind., to the late John and Gertrude (Ray) Litkenhus. Also preceding her in death are her husband, Leo Fella, four brothers, Cletus, Robert, Leo and Lloyd Litkenhus, and a sister, Mary Haggard.

She was a graduate of Grandview High School. She was married on June 20, 1940, to the late Leo Fella. She was a homemaker and member of St. Pius Catholic Church.

Mabel is survived by her nine children and their spouses, sons, Philip and Janean Fella of Tell City, IN, Jerry and Pat Fella of Santa Claus, IN, Michael and Julie Fella of Greenwood, IN, Robert and Mary Fella of Elberfeld, IN, Gregory and Carmin Fella of Hansen, KY, Roger and Brenda Fella of Troy, IN, Mark and Becky Fella of Evanston, IN; daughters, Mary Loy and Ronnie Feldpausch of Tell City, IN, and Phyllis and Charles Holpp of Huntsville, AL; a sister, Loyolis Hodde of Tell City, IN; 21 grandchildren, Cary and Brad Fella, Sheri Brown, Ali Weaver, Steve Holpp, Laurie Brenan, Aaron Holpp, Gretchen Travis, Stephanie and Sarah Fella, Tracy Schilling, Brian Fella and Amy Herring, Kevin and Keith Feldpausch, Leslie Baldwin, Lindsey, Marc, Monica, Audrie and Ashley Fella; and 26 great-grandchildren.

TELL CITY, Ind. � Anna Loyolis Litkenhus Hodde, 90, died Monday, December 28, 2009, at her home in Tell City. She was born on April 12, 1919, to the late John and Gertrude (Ray) Litkenhus.

Loyolas was a graduate of Grandview High School and Owensboro School for Practical Nurses. She worked as a LPN for Perry County Memorial Hospital and Beverly Healthcare in Tell City. She was married in 1940 to Charles H. Hodde, who precedes her in death. Also preceding her in death are sisters, Mabel Fella and Mary Haggard; and brothers, Lloyd, Leo, Robert and Cletus Litkenhus.

She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and Daughters of Isabella Nativity Circle 710.

She is survived by her children, John Hodde (Margaret) of Avon, Ind., Joyce Hodde of Owensboro, Ky., Edwin Hodde (Barbara) of Cherryville, N.C., Arthur Hodde (Nancy) of Owensboro, Ky., David Hodde (Susan) of Brownsburg, Ind., and Judith Rogers (Bruce) of Bremen, Ind.; eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Burial will take place in St. Mary Cemetery.

Two months later, his host country invaded Kuwait in a move that has brought hundreds of thousands of troops, mostly U.S., to the Persian Gulf. "It's good to be home," Chuck Hodde told reporters at the airport, where about two dozen family and friends gathered for the homecoming. Hodde lived with about 40 other hostages at the U.S. ambassador's residence. Nevertheless, the former Purdue University engineering student said he considered himself a hostage.

The news became an emotional barometer, as information from Voice of America and the British Broadcasting Corp. Influenced everyone's spirits. Within an hour of his arrival John and Margaret Hodde's family was together again Sunday with the homecoming of their son, Chuck, who was a hostage In Iraq four months. "I was beginning to worry about Christmas," John Hodde said as he walked slowly through Indianapolis International Airport.
"My wife and I both come from big families. And this year, she said she and Marcia (their daughter) would be in Baghdad at Christmas," John Hodde said.

The Hendricks County couple had just returned to Indianapolis from greeting their son's airplane in Houston. Their trip to Indiana was arranged and paid for by John B. Connally, the former Treasury Secretary, who helped arrange a flight for two dozen hostages released Saturday. Among them was Chuck Hodde, 24, who went to Iraq in June, mostly for the money and travel and to work on a Ser-Vaas Engineering Co. building project near the Iraqi capital..............

Obituary for Robert Oursland

Dr. Robert Oursland, of Phoenix, AZ, formerly of Wakonda, died on Sunday, Oct. 25, 1998 at Maryvale Hospital Medical Center, Phoenix, AZ. Robert was born Sept. 16, 1932 in Volin, to parents Regina Ray Oursland and Jewell Oursland.

He attended The University of South Dakota and obtained a bachelor of arts degree and attended medical school for two years at The University of South Dakota before transferring to Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, TX, where he received his medical degree in 1957.

He interned at St. Joseph's Hospital in Wichita, KS, and San Diego County Hospital. He went into private practice in Lemon Grove, CA, for one year before returning to Phoenix to engage in his surgical residency at Maricopa County Hospital.

In 1964, Dr. Oursland started his own general surgery practice with the help and guidance of his sister Delores Alonso, R.N. This brother, sister combination ran a medical practice for over 30 years until his recent demise. These two individuals ran a medical practice that saved countless lives over this period of time. Their dedication to their patients made an incredible impact on the population of the Valley from north to south and east to west.

This dedication went well beyond the call of an ordinary surgeon. He would get up at all hours of the day and night, when no other doctor would to help save lives. It didn't matter whether they had insurance or the ability to pay, he helped people when they needed it most. This was the type of man Dr. Robert Oursland was.

He was also a family man. Although no one is perfect in this world and everyone wished we could have done better, he always strived to support his family both financially and emotionally so that they could have a better life than he had growing up in the depression of South Dakota.

Dr. Oursland was a man who always did his best with the people he interacted with both professionally and personally and will be a man who is truly missed by all the people who knew him.

He is survived by his wife Elaine Oursland, and his children Peggy Ann, Robert, Jr. Chris and Joseph. Also, three sisters: Delores Alonso, of Phoenix, Joyce Lundquist of Beresford, and Mary Anne Poe of Staten Island, NY; one brother, John of Santa Monica, CA; one special nephew, James Scott Walker of Phoenix; three aunts and uncles and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Alan Jewell Oursland.

Graveside services were held at Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

	In the 1940 Census, there is a Cleo P Ray living in Seattle at 21 as the sister-in-law of Jack W Wilson and Jean M Wilson. 1935 residence for both Cleo P and Jean M is Yankton, SD. Both Jack W and Jean M were absent when the census taker was there. I have tried to track down both Jack and Jean to see where the "sister-in-law" designation came from. Jean M was not a sister of Cleophia Ray, Her sister Regina is in SD during 1940 census. The age of Jean is the same as Cleo's. Either this is not this Cleophia Ray or it is and Jean M is just a friend. There was also a Cleopha Winnifred Ray who was born in Yankton, SD in 1918 and died in CA in 2005. This is a different Cleo. This Cleo was the daughter of Richard Ralph Ray and Theresa Rhoda Fackelman. There is a Cleone B Ray who married a James B Roman in SD in 1937. This is not her. Unable to track Cleophia after 1935.

? Thomas P Ray - b. Sep 25, 1956, Solano Co., CA. This is the only Ray born in Solano Co., CA, with a mother's maiden name of Walsh, that was born before Joseph passed away in 1958. According to Jerald Dihl's obituary, he names a son Thomas Dihl. If this is Joseph's son, then he was only a toddler when his father died. Jerald Dihl very likely adopted the child.

Geneva Gohmann, 93, died Saturday, July 13, 2013.

She was born January 17, 1920 in Tell City, IN to the late Leo and Frances Ray Lutgring.

She is also preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Gohmann; brothers, Gilbert, Ray and Sydney Lutgring; sisters, Margaret Frazier, Bette Lutgring and Dorothye LaGrange.

She grew up in Perry County, IN, graduated from Tell City High School in 1937, and attended St. Mary and Elizabeth School of Nursing in Louisville becoming a registered nurse in 1941. She married Bernard Gohmann in 1951 and lived in Floyd County, IN for the next 50 years where she was a member of St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church and retired from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kentucky.

During my research I came across a birth certificate for a Port Jasper Lutgring. The birth date is the same as Alfred's. The birth certificate is the only time this name appears in the historical documents. It it a mystery. I cannot find a bc for Alfred. Possible hypotheses:

1) This was Alfred's name at birth and his parents changed it
2) Alfred's name was recorded incorrectly
3) Alfred and Sidney were twins. Sidney died as an infant. The recorder did not mark this on the birth certificate however. Also, the name Sidney was not listed as one of the children on grave marker of parents.

Charles James �Jim� Harding, 68, passed away Friday, February 5, 2016 at his home.

He was born November 12, 1947 to the late Charles and Alberta (Knable) Harding.

Also preceding him in death is a sister, Darlene Mahaney and a brother, Bob Harding.

Jim was a Vietnam Army veteran serving from 1967-1970 as an E5 Sergeant. He was united in marriage on July 3, 2009 to the former Tammy (Coon) Williams. Jim was currently working at Kimball International in Santa Claus. He was a member of the American Legion Post 213 and enjoyed football and NASCAR.

He is survived by his wife, Tammy Harding of Tell City; children, Shane, Ryan and Jamie Harding, all of Tell City, Jennifer Haynes of Owensboro, Rebecca McBride of Louisiana, Amanda Williams of Lynchville, KY, Shawn and Joshua Williams, both of Cloverport; brothers, Tim, Bill and Mike Harding, all of Tell City; 17 grandchildren and one great- grandchild.

John Roscoe Ray, 99, of Fostoria, died Sunday, June 7, 2020, at his home.

He was born Sept. 20, 1920, in Perry County, Indiana to the late Roscoe E. and Dorothea (Holtzman) Ray. He married Ruth M. Burkhart April 19, 1944, in Fort Rucker, Alabama and she preceded him in death Nov. 29, 2010.

Surviving are four children, John R. (Loretta) Ray Jr. of Springfield, Virginia, Donna (Randy) Scifers of Fostoria, Rebecca (Mark) Eldridge of Doyle, Tennessee and Michael (Vicky) Ray of Springfield; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Lois Ray of Plainfield, Indiana.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Thomas R. Ray; and five brothers and sisters, Robert (Alice) Ray, Jordan (Nettie) Ray, Justin Ray, Dorothy (Darryl) Edwards and Inez (Pat) Gallager.

A private family visitation will take place at Hoening Funeral Home and graveside services will follow at St. Wendelin Catholic Cemetery with Fr. Doug Taylor presiding and United Veterans of Fostoria providing military honors.

A memorial Mass will be announced at a later date.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Bridge Hospice in care of Hoening Funeral Home, 242 W. Tiffin St., Fostoria, OH 44830.
