About Annable's
name.....
Throughout the historical documents, Annable name has been spelled a
number of ways: Anna B, Annabelle, Annabell, Annabel, or Annable.
The first time Annable's name appears in the historical documents are
the 1860, 1870, and 1880 Census. All times being reported by the
male head of household who may or may not have been able to read or
write. Annable 's name was given as Anna B
The first variation of Annable's name appears on her marriage license,
where her name was spelled Annabel. It is unknown if Annable
filled out any part of this license or signed it without some other
document with her signature to compare it to. This is the only
time the spelling of Annabel appears in the historical documents.
The 1900 Census - Last part of first name is covered by census taker's
notation. But the last part of her name appears shorter than "belle"
when you zoom-in real close.
1910 - Census - Annable
1920, 1930, 1940, Census - Annabell or Annabelle
Death certificate for Annable, information provided by Mrs Roy Long, her
daughter Ethelyn - Annable
Grave marker - Annable
Her death notice had her nickname "Belle"
Death Certificate for son Chester gives mother's name as Annable Bloor
Death Certificate for daughter Dorothy Shoaf Larkin - Annable Bloor
Death Certificate for son Charles - Anna B Bloor
Based on the historical documents and the variations given of Annable's
name, all researchers can agree that there were.... spelling
variations. And that is all we can do.....unless we go back in
time and ask Annable. Or a bible is found that Annable herself
filled out with her hand. I went with "Annable" on this website
because this is what the family used at the end of her life (Death
certificate and grave marker). That is the only reason. And I
could be wrong.....or maybe I'm not........ |

1926 -
Marries Francis E Larkin ca 1926 per 1930 Census. Unable to find
location of this wedding.
I was unable to find any other information on Francis E Larkin.
What made it even more difficult was that there was another Francis E
Larkin in Dayton, OH that also lived on Brown St. The other
Francis E Larking was born in 1890 in OH and married a Teresa and had a
son Frances E Larkin, Jr who married a Sara. Francis who married
Dorothy, was still alive when she died in 1950

1930 -
Census - For some reason husband Francis' name is James on this Census.
This is the only time the name "James" appears. All other records
like the 1940 Census, City Directories and Dorothy's death certificate
all have her husband's name as Francis E Larkin or Frank Larkin |

Obituary for
Jo-Anne Scotford Rice |
|
 |
Jo-Anne
Scotford Rice of West Tisbury died peacefully
Christmas morning at Falmouth Genesis in Falmouth
after an extended illness. She was 79 years old.
Jo-Anne Scotford was born on Sept. 10, 1934, in
Lakewood, Ohio, to Paul and Gwen (Shoaf) Scotford.
She graduated from Lakewood High School in 1952 and
from Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio,
with a degree in Fine Arts, in 1956. In 1958, she
met and married Richard Doyle Rice, the nephew of a
neighbor.
After receiving a master’s degree in Art Education
from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland,
Jo-Anne taught high school and college art classes
before giving birth to her only child, Doyle
Scotford Rice, in November 1964. Shortly thereafter,
the family moved to Martha’s Vineyard, in order to
be closer to Jo-Anne’s mother, Gwen J. Scotford, who
was a longtime resident of the Campground in Oak
Bluffs. |
She was primarily a mother and
homemaker during Doyle’s childhood, though she continued to
paint, draw, and write poetry. The family moved back to the
Cleveland area in 1969 before finally returning to Martha’s
Vineyard for good in 1978, where Jo-Anne and Richard lived
until the present day.
Jo-Anne and Richard lived in several locations in Vineyard
Haven and Oak Bluffs before settling in their lovely house
in the woods of Longview in West Tisbury in 1990, a house
that was built primarily by Richard and Doyle.
She also earned a second master’s degree in Art Therapy from
Lesley College in Cambridge, Mass., in 1987.
Jo-Anne, also known as Jo or Jody, was a longtime member of
the Unitarian-Universalist Society of Martha’s Vineyard. She
had an avid interest in Buddhism and attended many
meditation and study retreats at the Insight Meditation
Society and the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies in Barre.
She loved family, being a loving and devoted grandmother,
her cats, her mother’s blue cottage in the Campground,
Cleveland, the woods, beaches in summer, travel to Mexico,
Italy, and South Africa, art museums, painting, poetry, folk
music, good films, theatre, the past, genealogical research,
Buddhist teachings, being a religious liberal, meditation,
yoga, swimming at State Beach, and living near Lambert’s
Cove Road.
She is survived by her husband, Richard; her son, Doyle,
daughter-in-law Nicole, grandson Matthew, and granddaughter
Danielle of Silver Spring, Md.; her half-brother John
Scotford of Ohio; several other cousins and relatives in
Ohio and South Africa; and her cat Blinker of West Tisbury.
A memorial service for Jo-Anne will be in the spring or
summer of 2014 at the Unitarian church in Vineyard Haven. |

- Annabelle and Leslie divorce sometime between this period. On
Annabelle's death record, her marital status is divorced. In the
1940 Census, Annabelle's marital status is married, however, there is a
line drawn through the "M". There is a possibility they were separated
at this point. |
