Obituary for John Franklin Frost |
|
 |
John
Franklin Frost, age 77, a resident of Elkins, departed
this life Friday morning (Aug. 8, 2008) after a long
struggle with Alzheimer's disease. He died peacefully at
home surrounded by his wife and children.
John was born in Meadville, Pa. on Jan. 20, 1931, the
only son of the late Franklin Foster Frost and Gladys
Gordon Frost. On June 6, 1954, he was married to the
former LaDonna Maxine Jenkins, who survives. The couple
celebrated 54 years together as husband and wife.
|
Also surviving are four children,
Beth Adkins and husband Scott of Rock Hill, S.C., Catherine
Bogarad and husband Barry of Cornelius, N.C., Frank Frost of
Phoenix, Ariz. and Thomas Frost of Charleston; and three
grandchildren, Josh Anacker, Elizabeth Frost and Matthew Adkins.
"Jack" was a graduate of East Fairmont High School. He earned a
journalism degree from Fairmont State College and then went to
the School of Physical Therapy at the Cleveland Clinic and
graduated with a master's degree in education from Case Western
Reserve. Upon graduation Mr. Frost served in the US Army,
assigned to the physical therapy clinic. He worked as a physical
therapist in Cleveland and continued at Davis Memorial Hospital
in Elkins from 1960 -1965.
Being an avid sports fan, John worked part-time at the Elkins
Inter-Mountain from 1962-2002 as sports editor. For over 40
years, he attended local football, basketball and baseball
games, took photos, wrote articles, and laid out the sports
page. In 1966, Mr. Frost started a career at Davis and Elkins
College in Elkins. From 1966-1987 he served as director of
public relations, then went on to become director of
development, where he worked with fundraising, planned giving
and capital campaigns. In 1988, John moved on to become
vice-president of development at Salem-Teikyo College in Salem.
From 1993-1994, he was director of development for the Salvation
Army in Charleston. Also during John's varied career he had the
opportunity to interview astronaut Neil Armstrong and TV star
Art Linkletter.
John was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church
in Elkins where he regularly attended and served on various
church committees. He was vice-president of the Kiwanis Club of
Elkins at one time, former member of the board of directors of
the Randolph County United Way, member of the West Virginia
Sports Writers Association, the Davis and Elkins College Booster
Club, and a former Rotarian. Mr. Frost organized the original
amateur photography competition contest of the Mountain State
Forest Festival and was also a former participant in the
Randolph County Sports Hall of Fame. He also worked on the Frank
and Eleanor Wimer Memorial Fund Drive, the Randolph County
Scholarship Fund at Davis and Elkins College, was one-time
secretary of the Elkins Little League and a supporter and
fundraiser for the Elkins Bands in the 1970's. For 13 years,
John and his wife were weekly volunteers at the local Salvation
Army.
In 1999, Davis and Elkins College selected John as the Volunteer
of the Year. This was awarded to a non-alumnus for unusual and
distinguished volunteer service to the college and the
community. These services included assisting with fundraising
initiatives, volunteering his talents as a photographer for
athletic and other special events and contributing
sports-related information for publication in the "Forward," the
magazine for alumni and friends of the college. He also provided
counsel and information to the development staff and shared his
ideas and experience in college administration.
Jack enjoyed several hobbies. He was an avid photographer,
traveling on backwood trails and country roads to get the
perfect scenic short. He also loved the WVU Mountaineers and for
years went to all the home football games.
Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Monday at the Tomblyn Funeral
Home in Elkins. On Tuesday, Mr. Frost will be moved to the First
United Methodist Church of Elkins where friends may call from
10-11 a.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Dr. Ellis E. Conley will
officiate and entombment will follow in the Mountain State
Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. |

1912 - 1920 - Marries John Mackie
Griffith somewhere other than WV. I searched the marriage
records in WV and did not find an earlier marriage to John M
Griffith, other than the 1945 marriage.
The only thing I can think of, is this couple had a love hate
relationship. They separated, then got back together again
over and over again in a 20+ year period. In every census,
Elsie is living in the home of someone else. |
