Obituary for Goldie McDaniel Moran
https://everloved.com/life-of/goldie-moran/obituary/
Accessed Sep 7, 2020
On Tuesday, March 31, 2020, Goldie McDaniel Moran, mother of three, grandmother of three, and great-grandmother of six children, passed away from the Coronavirus in Hartford, CT on her eighty-eighth birthday.

In 1932, Goldie Mae was born at home in Barber County in Moatsville, West Virginia. She was one of ten children born to Ellis and Cassie Poe McDaniel. When reflecting on her childhood, she often said, “In those days...” In those days, she enjoyed the comforting aroma of burning wood, the tart blackberries she plucked, and dipping her toes into the cold stream running through their farm. In those days they pulled warm eggs from beneath their hens. They threaded needles instead of going to the store. In those days they planted, picked, and preserved their own vegetables for the winter. They listened to the radio for the first time and maybe heard the news about the great depression and the great war being fought abroad. In those days, she was educated until her sophomore year of high school in a one-room country schoolhouse.

As the springtime of her life passed, Goldie married Fred Junior Moran on July 3, 1948. Together, they had three beautiful children, Sharon, Michael, and Sandra. After their separation and divorce, as a single woman, she raised their children on her own. This is a challenge for anyone, but one has to wonder what that was like in those days. Just as she was raised, Goldie was independent and resourceful. She earned her GED, and through distance learning fostered by her lifelong love of scripture, studied the Bible. She supported her family through her work in retail, home health care, and the factory industry at places like Prims Button and Sewing Notions and Glass Containers.

Like the lilies of the field, she was not preoccupied with material wealth, but she dedicated her life to her faith, her family, and her varied hobbies and interests. She was fond of reading and was a lifelong learner; nurturing a passion for flower arranging, cake decorating, and crafting. She was frugal. What little money she saved, she used for travel. She especially enjoyed her journeys with her nephew and niece Robert and Wanda Rebic. With them, and her many family and friends, she nourished her enjoyment of nature, visited lighthouses, covered bridges, and the beach. She cherished her extended family and faithfully returned for her yearly family reunion in West Virginia. She also fulfilled a lifelong dream of traveling to the Holy Land with a group from her church, where she devoted herself for many years. She did leave us a rich inheritance: a lineage without price.

Goldie is survived by her last living sister, Margrette Boliner, as well as a host of beloved extended biological and adopted family members and friends. She is also survived by her eldest daughter, Sharon Stevens Minarsky, her ex-husband Edward Stevens, and her spouse Anthony; Sharon’s daughter Kristen Stevens Lathrop, her spouse David, and their two children Sadie and Samuel; Michael Moran and his ex-wife Arlette Moran; her youngest daughter Sandra Poulin, her spouse Richard, and their two sons; Benjamin Poulin, his wife Krystle, and their two children, Wyatt and Lily; and their youngest son Derrick Poulin, his wife Jennifer, and their two children Roland and Riley.

Goldie was the sort of grandmother who never forgot a birthday, anniversary, or holiday. She always had a way of making sure that we felt loved, even from a distance. So, we take solace, as the winter of her life has come, that she will continue to love us from afar. As inspired by the Avett Brothers in their song No Hard Feelings, “her body couldn’t hold her anymore…she walked her last mile…and gave us her last kiss goodbye…She was ready…She was set free.”
