  About James birth date.  It is Oct 31, 1858.  As per the birth record above.  In the 1860 Census the age for the unnamed male is 1.  Which is correct.  He did not turn 2 until October.  In the 1870 Census his age is given as 11.  Which is again correct.  He would not have turned 12 until later that year.
 
About Middle Name.  Middle name is initial "S". The middle name "Forbes" o-n-l-y appears once in the historical record....on the 1870 Census. Everywhere else, it is the initial "S". Including his marriage record and grave marker

  1924 - According to the grave marker for James, he died in 1924.  I looked through the WV death certificates using every variation of his name.  I was unable to find the death certificate.  Died out of state??

Death Record for Adonijah Phillips

Some family trees on Ancestry have Adonijah's birth date as May 23, 1881.  Where this date came from is undocumented and was repeated on Find A Grave.  On Find A Grave someone placed Adonijah in the Phillips Cemetery.  Which is probably correct, considering this family's history.  However, there is again, no documentation for this or a grave marker to prove it.

Leona Mae “Wind Dancer” Zirkle, age 78, of Mabie, WV, died Tuesday, December 10, 2019, at Davis Medical Center in Elkins, WV.

She was born April 17, 1941, in Norton, WV, a daughter of the late Nimrod Cross and Freda Smith Gorder. On August 5, 1978, she married Larry Zirkle who survives.

Also surviving are, two sons, Samuel Zirkle and wife Faye of Buckhannon, WV and Jimmie Lee Davis of Warren, PA; four daughters, Ruth Vanord of Warren, Amy Flanagan of French Creek, WV, Kathy Reed and husband Ron “Dark Horse” of Buckhannon and Robin Schadt and husband Jerry of Bartonville, IL;
numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; three sisters, Janet Reemsnyder of Warren, OH, Jill Cross of Las Vegas, NV and Paulette Smith; one brother, Nim Cross and wife Patsy of York, PA and her mother-in-law, Margarite Zirkle of Belington, WV.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one brother, Paul Gorder [Kaster] ; one grandson, Franklin Flanagan; one granddaughter, Christina Gill and her best friend, LouAnn Loudin.

Mrs. Zirkle was a member of the Elkins Church of God, a secretary for the USDA and was a truck driver.

Friends will be received Monday, December 16, 2019, from 11 AM to 1 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 1 PM at the funeral home with Pastor Jeff Cochran officiating. Burial will follow in the Indian Camp Cemetery in French Creek, WV. She was born June 15, 1989 in Elkins, West Virginia to Carl and Robin (Flanagan) Gill.

 Survivors include her mother and step-father, Robin (Jerry) Schadt of Bartonville, father and step-mother, Carl (Peggy) Gill of Paducah, KY, one brother, Dusten Gill of Belington, WV, and three children: Alexis Anthony of Randleman, NC, Natalie and Mason Anthony of Belington, WV.
 
Christina was a mother, a student at Randolph College in Buckhannon, WV, and worked on oil rigs in West Virginia.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2018, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Davison-Fulton Bartonville Chapel. Funeral services will follow the visitation at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Cremation rites will be accorded following the services.

Born November 23, 1967 in Baltimore, she was the daughter of Nimrod F. Cross Sr. and Patricia (Schultz) Cross of York She was a small business owner of Set City, a graphic and website design company. A member of Community Cornerstone Church, she also enjoyed making crafts and gardening.

She is also survived by three [step] sons, Michael E. Rohrbaugh of York, Matthew A. Rohrbaugh of Lancaster and Christopher M. Rohrbaugh of Milwaukee, Wisc.; three brothers, Nimrod F. James L. Smith, 80, a former resident of Gateway Apartments, passed away Monday, July 25, 2005, at Nella’s Nursing Home where he had been a resident for the past year.

Born July 5, 1925, in Norton, he was the son of the late Thomas W. and Alice M. Smith.

He is preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence K. Smith and Walter Phillips; and two sisters, Freda M. Smith and Eula R. Smith.

He is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

James was previously employed by Junior Mercantile Company Store as a driller. James had also worked for several local mines in this area that are now closed. James was generous in spirit, he liked to dance at the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and family. James regularly attended the Elkins Church of God and took care of his mother in her final years. James will be sadly missed by those who knew him.

Friends will be received at F.E. Runner Funeral Home today after 7 p.m. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday from the Runner Chapel. The Rev. Ralph Summerfield and the Rev. Randall Richards will officiate. Interment will follow in Phillips Cemetery at Jimtown. F.E. Runner Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

  About the middle name of John and birth date.  There is no consistent middle name or dates. Each historical document has a different date. The WWI and WWII Registration birth dates are similar despite there being two different middle names.  On his death certificate June 1884 is given.

About the WWI and WWII Registrations - I am the only person (out of 39 family trees on Ancestry, Jan 2022) that has attached these records to John.  No one else appears to have bothered to look FOR them or AT them closely. If all of John's brothers registered, he would have had to also.  If you look past the different middle names and the slight variations in the birth dates, you can conclude this is the same person.

  This George Kelley might be George Washington Beauregard Kelley (1876 - 1928). This is the only George Kelley or Kelly, this age, living in Randolph in 1910 Census. The made-up "obit" on FAG says George WB Kelley never married. This may not be accurate.
  1912 - 1919 - Dora separates, divorces, or is widowed ( if not George WB Kelley) from George Kelley.  They have one son, Charlie.  Marriage license with Stanton below has her maiden name with no notion that she is a widow.  Therefore, I am leaning toward the marriage of George Kelley ending in an annulment or divorce.

CLORIS MARIE COURTNEY KELLEY, age 90 years, a former resident of Midland Street, Elkins, WV and more recently a resident of Nella's Nursing Home at Crystal Springs, departed this life Tuesday, October 30, 2007 at the nursing home.

She was born Wednesday, June 27, 1917 at Harding, WV a daughter of the late Martin Courtney and Emma Canfield Courtney. She was married to Charlie Everett Kelley, who preceded her in death during August of 1974.

Surviving are four sons, D. E. "Jack" Kelley and wife Doris, Elkins; Dale R. Kelley and wife, Mabel, OH; Dorsey A. Kelley, Belington; Darl T. Kelley and wife Gloria, Elkins; one brother, Arthur Courtney and wife, Dorothy, FL; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

Preceding her in death are one daughter, Doris M. Shifflett; one brother, Earl Courtney; two sisters, Grace Smith and Hallie Burnheical; and one granddaughter, Terri Marie Kelley.

Cloris attended the schools of Norton, was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church near Beverly.

A Graveside Service will be held at 11 AM, Thursday, November 1, 2007 at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman, WV. The Reverend S. Kent Price will officiate and interment will follow.

D.E. “Jack” Kelley, 81, a resident of Elkins, passed from this life Friday, September 21, 2018, at home surrounded by family and under the care of Mountain Hospice.

Jack was born Tuesday, November 17, 1936, in Norton, a son of the late Charles E. Kelley and Cloris M. Courtney Kelley. In August of 1974, he married the former Doris White who survives at home.

Left to cherish his memory are three children, Ronald E. Kelley and companion Patricia, Patti Weese and husband Dennie, all of Elkins, and Rusty Doerr and wife Carolyn of Morgantown, special granddaughter, Brianna Jack and husband Brad, special great-grandchildren, Dalton and Brayden Jack,
grandchildren, Dustin Doerr and wife Morgan, Devin and Derek Doerr, Garrett Weese and companion Kenna, Jamie Cox and companion Kevin, Chasity Kelley-Watson, Allyson Kelley, and eleven great-grandchildren, brothers, Dale Kelley and companion Mabel of Ohio, Darl “Tim” Kelley and wife Gloria, and Dorsey “Bunny” Kelley, and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Jack in death besides his parents was one daughter, Terri Kelley, one granddaughter, Jaime Moore, and one sister, Doris Shiflett.

Jack attended the schools of Randolph County and had been employed as a mechanic for several local Ford Garages. He was co-owner of T & K Auto in Elkins with Delbert Tallman. In 1995 he retired as the owner and operator of Jack Kelley Auto Service in Elkins. Jack enjoyed camping with the boys, corn roasts and was an avid gardener. He loved attending Orange Blossom Music Hall in Jane Lew and listening to Johnny Cochran on the fiddle and spending time with special friends Johnny Cochran and Clyde Wilson.

Jack’s request for cremation will be honored. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Terri M. Kelley, 46, a resident of 206 Midland St., Maplewood Addition, Elkins, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005, at her residence. She had been in her usual health and death was sudden and unexpected.

Born April 6, 1959, at Elkins, she was the daughter of D.E. Jack Kelley of the Maplewood Addition of Elkins and Patricia Daniels Kelley of Norton.

Terri had made her home with her father, D.E. Jack Kelley, and her special mother, Doris I. Kelley of Elkins since she was 10 years old.

Also surviving are two sisters, Patricia Weese and husband, Dennis, of Chenoweth Creek and Crystal Thorne and husband, Willie, of Norton; three brothers, Ronald Kelley and wife, Vicky, Matthew Kelley and wife, Dana, all of Elkins and Rusty Doerr and wife, Caroline, of Morgantown; and her paternal grandmother, Cloris Kelley, a resident of Nella's. In addition she is survived by several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, including two special great-nephews, Dalton and Brayden Jack and their parents, Brad and Brianna Jack; and also a very special cousin, Marianne Chewning.

Terri had attended the Appalachian Health School for the past several years. She was a helpful student who always took the time for the other students who were a part of her classroom. She was a member of First Christian Church on the Elkins Five-lane. Terri loved spending time with her family, attending church, going to school, listening to gospel music, doing latchwork and painting. She was one of God's special angels, always showing her love and caring. She will be sadly missed and will always remain in the hearts of those who truly loved her.

At the request of the deceased the remains will be cremated. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Dec. 28, at 7 p.m. at First Christian Church located 3.9 miles south on the Elkins Five-lane. Kent Price, pastor of the church will officiate. All family and friends are invited to attend to celebrate Terri's life. In lieu of flowers the family has suggested that memorial contributions be made in Terri's memory to the First Christian Church in care of Kent Price of Valley Bend. Mr. and Mrs. Darl “Tim” Kelley celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Nov. 1.

Mr. Kelley retired from NAPA Auto Parts in 2009 after 33 years of service.

Neal Edward Elmore, age 67, of Newark, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 29, 2021, with his loving family by his side.

Neal was born on July 11, 1954, to the late Harlie and Edith (George) Elmore in Warren, Ohio. He loved hunting, fishing, watching westerns, and listening to Gospel Blue Grass. Neal was a graduate of Champion High School and a longtime member of the ITAM29 and enjoyed eating at Sunrise Pizza.

He is survived by his loving daughter, Lezlie (Jason) Lucas; grandson, Neal “Emery” Ankrom; brother-in-law, Jim Freeman; nephew, Randy (Stephanie) Freeman, and many cousins.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Janice Elaine Freeman.

A celebration of life will be held on November 6, 2021, from 1-4 PM at the Sunrise Inn, 510 East Market Street, Warren, Ohio 44481. In lieu of flowers please consider joining Lezlie in celebrating Neal’s life on November 6 at Sunrise Inn or to the families

HERMIT BENJAMIN WOLFE, age 94 years, a resident of Jimtown, WV departed this life early Thursday morning, January 31, 2013 at the Davis Memorial Hospital at Elkins, WV.

He was born Friday, August 16, 1918 at Hemlock, WV to the late Ephraim and Naomi Zirkle Wolfe. He was married to the former Mary Lorraine Elmore, who preceded him in death.

Surviving are two sons, Kenneth Benjamin Wolfe and wife Patricia; Roger Lee Wolfe and wife Wanda, all of Warren, OH; four grandchildren, Tammy Dalrymple and husband Walt;
 the Rev. Kennith Wolfe, Jr. and wife Marlene; Jeffery Wolfe; and Kim Schoonover; six great grandchildren, Amanda; Renden; Logan; and Marshall Wolfe; Alex Bronsen; and Valerie Dalrymple and several nieces and nephews. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Preceding him in death are four sisters; three brothers; four step sisters; and two step brothers.

Hermit served in the Civilian Conservation Corp as a young man at Glady, WV and was a proud Veteran of the U. S. Army, serving during World War II in the European Campaign in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany with the 40th Engineers. He was a United Mine Worker's of America worker for twenty seven years in the mines of Randolph County and was a construction worker, working for the Labor Union of Clarksburg WV for fifteen years. He also worked for Home Hardware of Elkins for many years.

He was a person who loved to talk and never met a stranger. He was an avid gardener who loved his potato patch, loved to hunt and fish and greatly loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 to 8 PM, Sunday. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel, Monday, February 4, 2013 at 1:30 PM. The Rev. John Frum, a nephew of Hermit, will officiate and interment will follow at the Phillips Cemetery at Jimtown, WV, where the H. W. Daniel's Post # 29, American Legion, the Tygarts Valley Post # 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the WV National Guard Honor Guard will conduct full military honors. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Phillips Chapel Church and Cemetery Fund.

Robert W. “Bob” Phillips, 98, a resident of the Kingsville community, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2017, in Pocahontas Memorial Hospital at Marlinton.

He was born June 28, 1918, at Jimtown, a son of the late George Marshall Phillips and Vinnie Rowan Phillips.

On April 8, 1944, at Elkins, he was married to Loretta Pearl Elmore Phillips, who preceded him in death Aug. 15, 1991.

He is survived by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Roy and Kathryn Howes of Kingsville, with whom he resided for the past two and a half years.

Also preceding him in death was one son, Gary Allen Phillips; four brothers, Ralph, Ray, Russell and Roy Phillips; and four sisters, Ruth Paugh, Reta and Ruby Simon and Jane Doerr.

Robert owned and operated Phillips Auto Sales prior to his retirement. He was a member of Phillips Chapel United Methodist Church at Jimtown.

Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, at Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Donald Butcher officiating. Interment will follow in Phillips Cemetery at Jimtown.

John Dayton Elmore, 77, a resident of the Jimtown community, departed this life Saturday evening, Jan. 29, 2005, at his residence. He had been in declining health.

He was born Thursday, Oct. 27, 1927, at Norton, a son of the late Fred Woodford Elmore and Mary Lucy Phillips Elmore.

On July 4, 1952, he was married to the former Elsie Miller, who survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Calvin A. Elmore, David A. Elmore and girlfriend, Doretta Bennett, and Roy G. Elmore, all of Jimtown; three daughters, Diana L. Workman and husband, Brent, of Elkins, Donna Polce and husband, Michael, and Deborah Conley and husband, Greg, all of Jimtown; one brother, William C. Elmore and wife, Jeanette, of Jimtown; one half brother, Carl David Elmore and wife, Carolyn, of Jimtown; one stepsister, Willa Mae Bibey of Belington; four half sisters, Kathryn Howes and husband, Alfred, of Philippi, Wilma Jean Merrit of Beverly, Rosalea Miller and husband, Howard, of Mabie, Joyce Bender and husband, Tommy, of Kingville; 22 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death besides his parents were one brother, Harley Elmore; two sisters, Loretta Phillips and Lorraine Wolfe; two half brothers, Robert Neal and Ray Henry Elmore; and one half sister, Shirley Bodkins.

He attended school at Mabie and had served as a rifleman during World War II with the U. S. Army. He had worked in steel mills for 10 years and in the coal mines for 23 years. He retired in 1988 from Island Creek Coal Co. at Bayard. He was a member of the Coalton Veterans of Foreign Wars, was an avid gardener, loved to sing and play guitar, and was a Methodist by faith.

Friends will be received at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel Wednesday at 11 a.m. The Rev. CALVIN ANDREW ELMORE SR., age 58 years, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, October 20, 2010. He was under the care of the Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center at Clarksburg, WV and died at the Barbour County Good Samaritan Center surrounded by his loving family. Death was attributed to several heart attacks.

He was born Tuesday, September 2, 1952 at Coalton, WV a son of the late John Dayton Elmore and Elsie Miller Elmore. He is survived by his loving mother: Elsie Miller Elmore, Jimtown; also surviving is one son: Calvin Andrew Elmore Jr. of Luray, VA and three daughters: Melissa Tallman, Belington, WV, Elizabeth Shumate, OH, and Ashley Masters of IN; and nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one brother: David A. Elmore and companion Doretta K. Bennett, Jimtown. Three sisters: Diana L. Workman and husband Brent, Elkins, Donna Marie Polce and husband Michael, and Deborah L. Conley and husband William, all of Jimtown; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death his father: John D. Elmore and by one brother: Roy G. Elmore.

He attended the Norton Grade School and the Coalton Twelve Year School. Calvin was a Veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Vietnam Conflict. He was a coal miner for Republic Steel and a Timberman. He was a noted artist and wrote songs; loved to play the guitar and sing. He was an avid gardener, and had a wonderful garden this year. Calvin was a Methodist by faith. He will be greatly missed by his family, and all who knew him.

The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 to 8 PM, Friday. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel, Saturday, October 23, 2010 at 1: 30 PM. The Rev. James Murphy will officiate and interment will follow at the Phillips Chapel Cemetery at Jimtown.

Diana Lucille Elmore Workman, 65, a resident of Elkins, West Virginia, departed this life Tuesday, June 8, 2021, at her home with her loving family by her side and under the care of West Virginia Hospice.

She was born Monday, April 16, 1956, at Warren, Ohio, a daughter of the late John Dayton Elmore and Elsie Marie Miller Elmore, who survives at Jimtown, West Virginia.

On June 9, 1973, at Phillips Chapel Church at Jimtown, West Virginia, she was married to Brent Edgar Workman, who survives. They celebrated 48 years of marriage.
They had resided in Germany during Brent’s military service before returning back home to Elkins, West Virginia. They enjoyed every minute together.

Also surviving are three daughters, Buffy Jo Tarley and husband, Michael, of Fairmont, Lena Marie Corley and husband, Nicholas, of Montrose, and Sarah Ann Workman of Elkins; one brother, David Allen Elmore of Jimtown; two sisters, Donna Marie Polce and husband, Michael, and Deborah Lee Conley and husband, Greg, all of Jimtown; six grandchildren, Nicholas Ryan Tarley, Michael Ethan Tarley, Lillian Nicole Corley, Emily Jo Corley, Olivia Grace Hinzman and Brenten Orion Olnick; three great- grandchildren, twins, Shawn and Colton Rush, and Raelyn Hayes.

Preceding her in death is her granddaughter, Alexis Morgan Hayes; and two brothers, Calvin Andrew Elmore and Roy Glenn Elmore; maternal grandparents, Harry and Mary Miller; and paternal grandparents, Fred and Gladys Elmore.

She was a graduate of Coalton High School. She had worked at the former G.C. Murphy’s Diner, Dori’s Dinner, Colonial Place and Citizens Bank of WV. She grew up attending and was a member of the Phillips Chapel Church, where she also loved to sing. Diana enjoyed traveling, shopping and very much enjoyed cooking for people. She was a very caring, loving and sweet lady, who made a huge impact on everyone she met. She was very close with all her family and loved them with all of her heart.

The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. Final rites will be conducted from the funeral home on Saturday, June 12, 2021, at 10 a.m. The Rev. Terry Cannon will officiate and interment will follow at the American Legions Little Arlington Cemetery at Cravensdale.

Roy Glenn Elmore, 51, a resident of Jimtown, departed this life peacefully early Saturday evening, Nov. 1, 2008, at his home with all his family at his side. He had been in declining health for the past year.

He was born Tuesday, Sept. 24, 1957, at Warren, Ohio, the youngest son of Elsie Miller Elmore, who survives at Jimtown, and the late John Dayton Elmore.

Also surviving are two daughters, Amy Beth Elmore and Jessica Kaitlyn Elmore; one son, Daniel Glenn Elmore, all of Elkins;
two brothers, Calvin A. Elmore and David A. Elmore and companion, Doretta K. Bennett, all of Jimtown; three sisters, Diane L. Workman and husband, Brent, of Elkins, Donna Marie Polce and husband, Michael, and Deborah L. Conley and husband, Greg, all of Jimtown; one grandson, Noah Wingfield of Chenoweth Creek; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his paternal grandparents, Fred and Gladys Cutright Elmore; and his maternal grandparents, Harry and Mary LeeMaster Miller.

He attended the Norton Grade School and Coalton 12-Year School. He worked for the Island Creek Coal Co. for 17 years and prior to his illness he worked for the Wilson Lumber Co. at Elkins and Tanner Lumber Co. at Jimtown.

Roy loved the outdoors, and fishing and hunting were his favorite pastimes. He wrote songs and loved to play and sing on the guitar. He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him.

Justen William Shomo, 24, a resident of Beverly, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2014, at his home. His death was unexpected.

He was born March 8, 1990, at Elkins, a son of William R. Shomo, who survives at Junior with his wife, Brenda, and Deborah Lea (Elmore) Conley, who survives at Beverly with her husband, William Gregory Conley.

Also surviving are one son, Samuel William Allen Shomo of Junior; one sister, Kristen Lea Wilfong of Charleston; and his maternal grandmother, Elsie Marie Wilfong of Jimtown
community.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Denver Lee and Natalie (Lantz) Shomo; and his maternal grandfather, John Elmore.

Mr. Shomo worked around several area lumber mills, the most significant being Allegheny Wood Products. He was also a former employee of Tractor Supply. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, from Schoonover-Stemple Funeral Chapel, 95 S. Crim Ave. in Belington. Pastor Rick Williams of New Covenant Church at Junior will officiate, and interment will follow in Knights of Pythias Mountain View Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., the funeral hour Sunday.  Schoonover – Stemple Funeral Chapel was entrusted with the arrangements.

In the marriage records of Montana are the marriages of of Malissa A Phillips and Mildred M Phillips.  Both marriage records have the same birth dates, Feb 11, 1927 AND list the same parents.  My initial thought was that Malissa and Mildred were twins. Malissa A Phillips is found in the 1930 and 1940 Census, as shown above.  But where was Mildred during these two Census records? In 1930, Maudie Edmond was back living with her parents, no child.  In 1940, Maudie is living with her brother with 2 of her children from husband Moore.  No Mildred M Phillips.

If Malissa and Mildred were two people then I guess they took off to Montana on some great adventure.  Malissa married first to Robert Kerstein in Missoula Co., MT.  Mildred married 5 months later to an Army soldier, Allen J Davis, in Ravalli Co., MT

Malissa, after she marries, drops out of the records.  Husband Robert marries again in 1949, AZ.  So this would mean Malissa died or was divorced by 1949??  I am unable to find any marriage records for a Malissa Phillips or Kerstein.

Mildred M Phillips stays married to Allen Davis until she dies in 1988 in Alabama.

Because Mildred is absent in the 1930 and 1940 Census, I began to wonder if Malissa and Mildred were the same person..

When I dug into the history of Robert Kerstein, one could conclude, that he might have been an unsavory character.  He had been convicted of rape and had spent time in prison.  His wife Betty Luella Johnson divorced him in May 1944, for this very reason (per divorce record).  So it appears, he might have been someone who abuses women.

What if .....and I could be wrong.... Malissa and Mildred are the same person?

Malissa, after a couple months of marriage, discovers that hubby Robert Kerstein is not a keeper, leaves town, and changes her name. Then marries Allen Davis and moves on with her life.  Or did Malissa die during this relationship??

The other thing that might back-up the name change theory is the obituary for Maudie Edmond Moore.  There is no mention of a daughter Malissa either living or having preceded her in death.  Mildred Davis is however mentioned.  The omission of Malissa's name in the obit may have been an error. Or perhaps, Malissa was now Mildred.

Hazel Laura Phillips O'Kernick, age 90 years, a resident of Coalton, WV departed this life Wednesday afternoon, March 2, 2016 at the Valentines Personal Care Home at Elkins, WV with her son by her side and under the care of Hospice Care Corporation.

She was born Wednesday, March 18, 1925 at Norton, WV, a daughter of the late Henry W. and Flotie E. Arbogast Phillips. On January 3, 1948 at Coalton, WV she was married to Joseph O'Kernick, who preceded her in death May 24, 2007. They had celebrated sixty years of marriage.

Surviving are one son, Joseph Leo O'Kernick and wife Della of Beverly; four grandchildren, Angela Barrickman and husband Brian, Christina Umbright and husband Bill, Joseph Albert O'Kernick and wife Ana, and Patrick Joseph O'Kernick and fiancé Jennifer Lewis; and six great grandchildren, Zachary, Nicholas and Alexandra Barrickman, Tyler and Katie Umbright and Isabella O'Kernick; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death are two brothers, Elmer and Donald Phillips; two sisters, Mary Keener and Jean Wilson.

She attended the schools of Randolph County. During World War II, she worked in an ammunition factory and she was a homemaker. She was a member of Saint Patrick's Catholic Church at Coalton. She loved giving and getting hugs. She loved her grandchildren, was well known for her bread baking and was passionate about her African violets.

A private family gathering will be held. A memorial mass will be held at a later date. The Very Rev. Donald X. Higgs, VF will preside and interment will follow at the Saint Vincent Cemetery at Kingsville, WV. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the charity of your choice.

Roger Lee Keener, Sr. departed this world to be with our heavenly father on Thursday, September 2, 2021. He was born in West Virginia in 1948.

He joined the Navy out of high school where he met and married Nancy L. (Cason) Keener, who still survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his four children: Sandra Keener (Steve), Sherrie Perry (Doug), Roger Keener, Jr. and Brandi Phillips (Michael); eleven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two sisters, Roxie Richardson (Jim) and Peggy Richardson.

He is predeceased by his parents Woodrow and Mary Keener, and two angel grandchildren.

Jean E. Wilson passed away June 23, 2011, at the age of 79, surrounded by her family.

Jean was born in Norton, W.Va., to Henry and Flotie (Arbogast) Phillips on May 24, 1932. Jean had two brothers and two sisters, Hazel, Mary, Elmer and Don. They later moved to Coalton, W.Va.

Jean graduated from Coalton High School with the class of 1950. She worked at Murphy’s 5 & 10, Wayne’s Feed Store, and the Morgantown Hospital in West Virginia. Jean met the love of her life, LeRoy Wilson, who was serving in the Korean War. They married on Dec. 25, 1952. Together they were blessed with seven children. In 1955, they moved to Anaconda, where they made their home.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, brothers and one sister.
She is survived by six daughters, Joyce (Jerry) Beasley, Linda (Lauren) Senner of Butte, Sherry (Ted) Bell of Roseville, Calif., Lynette (Tom) Williams, Barbara Wilson and Stacy LaForge of Anaconda; one son, LeRoy (Kathy) Wilson of Anaconda; sister, Hazel O’Kernick of Coalton; 19 grandchildren, JR (Jenny), Dan, Mike, Jon (Ashlee) and Joe (Tami) Beasley, Janet (Daniel) Grogman, Robert Kopp, Maria Newbold, Amanda, LeRoy, and Caitlyn Jean Wilson, Joe and Kirsten Pagliaro, Ryan, Angelo, Harold, Angel, and Alex LaForge and Kiandra Beatty; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jean loved to spend time with her family by picnicking in the backyard and watching the grandchildren grow up.

Jean was a member of the United Methodist Church of Anaconda and loved all her Christian family.

Memorial donations can be made to the United Methodist Church of Anaconda or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 28, at the United Methodist Church in Anaconda. Interment will follow in New Hill Cemetery. A Wake/Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 27, at the KT Riddle Funeral Home Chapel

SHELBY - RODNEY "NUBS" EUGENE PHILLIPS, 48, of Ohio 314, died Wednesday, November 21, 2007, at home after a short illness.

He was born September 23, 1959, in Loudonville to Donald and Joyce Oswalt Phillips and attended Lucas High School.

A lifelong area resident, "Nubs" worked as a tree trimmer for both Nelson and Asplundh Tree Services. He was an avid NASCAR fan, and enjoyed working outside in his garden.
Most of all, he delighted in spending time with his family and friends.

Nubs was a loving father, grandfather and awesome friend and will be remembered for his sense of humor and unmatched smile.

He is survived by his life long companion, Margie Phillips; five children, Tabitha Vasquez of Mansfield, Joe and Kim Cantlebarry of Shelby, Kathy Phillips of Bellville, Rebecca Phillips of Mt. Vernon and Emily Phillips of Mansfield; six grandchildren, Brianna and Jordan Vasquez, Colton Cantlebarry, Melissa Akins, Sierra Lykins, and Justice Franks; and six siblings, Cindy Hicks of Mansfield, Raymond Oswalt, Joe and Ruth Pastine, Doug Phillips, Charlie Phillips and Wayne Booher Jr.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, John Phillips.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Maria, Ruth, and The Rev. Andrew Angel along with the complete staff of Southern Care Hospice for their empathy, compassion and loving kindness.

Friends may call Sunday, November 25, 2007 from 1 to 4 p.m. in Bellville Snyder Funeral Home where the funeral service will be Monday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Andrew Angel will officiate and burial will follow in Bunkerhill Cemetery.

MANSFIELD - Cynthia Christine Louise Phillips Weikle Hicks, 43, passed away on Thursday, February 26, 2009 in MedCentral Mansfield Hospital following a brief illness.

Cindy was born on August 13, 1965 in Loudonville and graduated from Clear Fork High School.

For numerous years Cindy was employed at Marco Photo working in the data entry department. Recently she worked as a home health aide for Southern Care Hospice.

A racecar enthusiast, Cindy was much more than just a fan. From working on motors to creating decals, she fully embraced the racecar experience.
When not tinkering on cars herself, she could be found sharing that love of racing with family. She looked forward to taking her nephew to the races.

Family oriented, she was always up for a hand of cards, Uno and Euchre her favorite.  Cindy also had a quiet, relaxed side. She loved nature and being outdoors, especially gardening.  Cindy will be remembered for her love of family. She simply was a foundation for everyone to lean on.

She is survived by her mother, Margaret Louise Weikle of Bellville; her fiancé, Bruce Garverick of Mansfield; sister, Tiffany Phillips of Mansfield; brothers, Ray Oswalt of Bellville, Doug and Charlie Phillips of Mabie, West Virginia, and a brother and sister-in-law, Joe (Ruth) Pastine of Mabie, West Virginia; adopted siblings, James (Tamala) Mitchell of Mansfield, Kimberly Applegate, Tolby Mitchell, and Clifford Weikle all of Bellville, Dodi (Troy) Mast of Millersburg, Jonathan (Sue) Weikle of Mansfield, Tia Weikle of Mansfield, and Scott Weikle of Bellville; her very close friend, Barb Foltz; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family including her cats, Barney, Andy, and Thelma Lou; and her dog, Romeo.

Cindy was preceded in death by her birth parents, Donald Phillips and Joyce Oswalt; adopted father, Freddie Weikle; and brothers John and Rodney "Nubs" Phillips.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 1, 2009 from 2-6p.m. in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home with the funeral service beginning at 11a.m. on Monday. Burial will follow in Bunkerhill cemetery. A luncheon will be held at the Perrysville VFW Post 8586 immediately following the graveside service.
