The 1850 Census is the only historical record where Susan
appears as the first name for Elizabeth. All other family
records have her name as Elizabeth or Bettie. Susan probably
was her first name, but was dropped and forgotten about over
time.
The use of Belle as Elizabeth's middle name.
Yes, old records are hard to read, but come on! I cannot
find one historical record that actually uses the name Belle
in association with Elizabeth. Someone at some point
transcribed Bettie as Belle and now 100+ family trees on
Ancestry copied this information. Belle IS NOT
Elizabeth's middle name. |

include his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth D. Peters; and a son,
Dyher R. Peters.
ELIZABETH L. PETERS, 83, Of Lake Wales died Wednesday at the
Lake Wales Convalescent Center. A native of Elkins, W.Va.,
she moved to this area four years ago from Winter Haven. She
was a retired clerk for the Cypress Garden Theme Park and
attended the Grace Lutheran Church. She is survived by a
son, Dyher R. |

RUTH
LEE DAFT POLING, age 88 years, a well known educator
of Randolph County and a resident of 464 Central
Street, Elkins, West Virginia, departed this life
Wednesday evening, March 3, 2004, at Colonial Place.
She had been in declining health for the past three
years.
She was born Saturday, May 29, 1915 at Elkins, West
Virginia, a daughter of the late Jacob Loring Daft
and Mittie Vanscoy Daft. On December 24, 1940, at
the Israel United Methodist Church at Kerens, West
Virginia, she was married to the former Allen Clare
A.C. Poling, who preceded her in death August 5,
1993.
Surviving are one daughter Roberta Lynn Poling
Hershey and son-in-law Ronald Wayne Hershey, I,
Baltimore, Maryland, one granddaughter, Rhonda Lynn
Hershey, one grandson, Ronald Wayne Hershey, II,
both of Baltimore, Maryland, one niece, Charlene
Johnson Tuzzolo and cousin, Winifred Tacy. |
She was the last surviving
member of her immediate family. Preceding her in death
besides her parents and husband were her twin brother,
Robert Lewis Daft in 1986.
Mrs. Poling, was a graduate of East Fairmont High School,
with the Class of 1933. She completed under graduate studies
at Fairmont Normal School. She received her Masters Degree
in Education from West Virginia University. An elementary
school teacher, Mrs. Poling taught in the Marion County and
Randolph County Schools including Homestead, Central and
Midland Elementary Schools, retiring in 1977.
The Polings moved to Dailey in 1946 and to their Central
Street home in 1956.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church at
Elkins, where she was a member of the N. I. Hall Gleaners
Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Womens Circle #
2. She was a past Worthy Matron of the Randolph Chapter #
74, Order of the Eastern Star and Past President of the
Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, Phi Chapter. She was also a
member of the Randolph County Retired School Employees and
the Davis Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She was a noted cook,
always cared for others and loved flowers.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral
Home of Elkins from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM, Friday. On Friday,
at 7:30 PM, at the funeral home, the Randolph Chapter # 74,
Order of the Eastern Star, will conduct ritualistic
services. On Saturday morning, March 6, 2004, Mrs. Poling
will be moved to the First United Methodist Church, where
final rites will be conducted at 10 AM. The Reverend Doctor
Ellis E. Conley will officiate and interment will follow at
the Israel Cemetery at Kerens, West Virginia. The family
suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of
contributions to the First United Methodist Church, 315
Kerens Avenue, Elkins, West Virginia 26241. The Lohr & Barb
